Second Gen Health Nuts

Ok, I just need to brag on my boys for a minute. Lately, I am noticing that they are gravitating more towards the good, healthy foods rather than the junk. That might be because we don't typically have junk food in the house but even out at the stores Hunter will request healthy foods. The other day I let him pick out a treat while we were at the store because he had strep and wasn't feeling well. His choice? Strawberries and Banana Chips. Win!!! Even little man is starting to LOVE his fruits and veggies. He is all about granola, raisins and cucumber.
I am a very happy, proud momma. Hopefully they'll keep it up :)

Girls Night Out

As a wife and a mom of 2 boys, I gotta say that I love my girl time. Even though its hard to find time with everyone schedule to set aside a night that works everyone.
Well last night was the FIRST North Houston MRTT Girls Night and it was a blast!! I have a great bunch of ladies in our running club.
We went to 1252 Tappas Bar. I had never been there before but I had heard good things about it. And let me tell you, those good things were right! I loved the atmosphere and the down to earth vibe. Plus it didn't hurt that it was Happy Hour with $3 Sangria all night either! ;) The food was amazing too. After that we decided to be bad and go over to Treat Cupcakes. Yes, totally not GF Friendly and I am totally paying for it today but oh well. Lesson learned.
I see a lot more GNO's in our future!!!

Iron Warrior Dash

Well, this past weekend was the Iron Warrior Dash and all I can say is Holy Hell...it was a butt kicker!!! I mean, don't get me wrong, I knew it would be tough but I think I severely underestimated just how brutal it would be. I should have known that it would be HILLY and ROCKY since it was held at Rocky Hill Ranch. I'm really disappointed in myself because I turned into Grandma Betty pretty early on into the ran because I was having issues with my still healing ankle. BUT, I made it through the 15 miles and 20+ obstacles and I am proud of that. I could have easily given up but that's not something my body knows how to do.

I will definitely consider doing it again next year if I can convince a few people to brave it with me ;)

Gluten Free's The Way To Be

For the last 6 or 7 months I have been dealing with some very annoying health issues. The list is lengthy and some of it might be TMI so just trust me when I say it's been a hassle. After doing research and talking with the doc I'm 99% positive it's all due to a gluten intolerance, or Celiac Disease. I've always had a few food related stomach issues and as I've gotten older they've gotten worse.
Anyway, I've been cutting out foods that contain gluten and I've got to say, so far so good. We're going to give it a few months before we start to see the real impact but I'm hopeful that this is the answer to my problems!

I am so excited to announce that North Houston MRTT will be a featured vendor at The Houston Mom Expo in April!! We even get to host group runs with attendees on both the Friday and Saturday morning :)
I am so honored to be a chapter leader for such an amazing organization that truly loves and supports all of its members. Our chapter is growing and I cannot wait to spread the word and represent MRTT at the expo!

Injured Runner Diet

I've come to terms that I am going to have to change quite a few things over the next month if I want to make it through with this boot and my sanity.

I know that my biggest issue is going to be modifying my diet. As a runner, you rely on the extra calories to refuel your body after a good run or workout session. I've gotten used to eating accordingly. Well now, my calorie burn is going to drop significantly since my workouts will be less cardio and less intense. I'm anticipating a slight weight gain and loss of strength and endurance but that doesn't mean I can just eat whatever I want! No, no...now more than ever my diet is very important. I need to make sure I'm getting enough calcium to help repair my fracture and eating to help my muscles keep up the burn with what exercises I can still do.

Now this brings me to the purpose of this post...My Injured Runner Diet. It might sound like a no-brainer...just eat slightly less and continue to eat clean and healthy. Well, yes, in theory that's what I've got to do. But I am going to need to be held accountable since I tend to graze on not so good things when I'm stressed and upset and bored. (And I know being in the damn boot will make me be all 3 of those things)

So, I am going to be blogging all of my meals for the next month while I'm in the boot! The good and the bad. I will be totally open and honest and hopefully this will keep me on track!

Wish me luck!!

My worst nightmare...at least one of them...

Well, I finally went back to the doctor to get my ankle looked at again. It's been 3 weeks since the initial visit and in all honesty I should have gone back sooner. But I'm crazy and stubborn and didn't want him to tell me that I couldn't run the half marathon.
Anyway, I went back today and after lots of X-rays and examining it turns out I have a pretty nasty fractured fibula. My doctor said he was surprised that I not only finished the half but that I did it in 2:40. I told him I was pretty determined lol!!
The good news, if there is any to be found, is that I can still walk, work on upper body and abs and as long as I stabilize my ankle I can still do the Iron Warrior Dash.
Pray I don't go TOO crazy over the next month not being able to run or do most cardio!!!

First Half-Marathon is DONE!

Oh my goodness...yesterday was THE day! The day I had been training for for the last 4 months. The day that I honestly never thought would come. I ran my very first half marathon, The Woodlands Half. I had actually been debating NOT running it because of my ankle injury that I got a few weeks ago but me, being the stubborn lady that I am, knew that that was just not an option. I was going to run no matter what!!
It was cold, and windy but I put on my big girl panties and sucked it up. (For those of you that might not know, I'll let you in on a little secret...I HATE the cold)
I was really excited that I not only had my Bestie running with me but my mom was also running with me. They are both seasoned marathoners and I don't think they know just how much I look up to them and truly appreciate their guidance and support. I don't think I could have done it without them there with me!!
I had already run the course a month prior to the actual race on a training run so I was familiar with the route and knew I could go the distance. But that was all before my epic fall.
The first few miles were great. No pain, no problems. Then around mile 5-6 I knew that I was going to have issues. But I kept going...even if I had slowed down. Then it hit me about mile 10. I WAS IN PAIN. MASSIVE SHARP PAIN. I was is tears but I had to keep going. And I did. I finished the race in 2:40...10 minutes slower than my 2:30 goal. At first I was so upset with myself that I didn't achieve that time but the more and more I thought about it I realized that I had still done great considering my injury. And I know there will be plenty of other chances to improve my time once I get my ankle healed again.
After the Half and Full Marathons and 5K there was a Kid's 2K that my little man, my husband and I all ran together as a family. It was so awesome to see all the little ones having fun and running and Hunter had a great time. He was especially proud to receive his very own medal at the end. He decided that he needed to take it to Show-and-Tell tomorrow at school.
All in all it was a great experience. One that I will remember forever.
